Rewatching Harry Potter Part 1
Monday, July 27, 2009 at 01:58PM Info: I'm rewatching all the Harry Potter movie in preparation of an article I plan on writing about Harry Potter the hero. I've never read any of the book and at the start of this I would have ordered the movies 4,5,3,6,1,2 from good to bad.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Review:
Going back and rewatching Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is similar to going to back in time; you've always wanted to do this, but when you go back, it's different than you remember. This really isn't the Harry Potter I remember and it isn't the Harry Potter that is in The Half-Blood Prince. This Harry has all the staples of the traditional hero; he's the underdog, he's got power he doesn't understand and he's got a terrifying villain. I'm not sure where this series got off track, but I do have to say that it started off strong. There is a sense of wonder and amazement that is lost in later films. Harry Potter is a freaking wizard! He's grown up in this horrible world that he never was meant to belong to and he gets out of it in the most awesome way. Part of the reason this works so well is that it IS the first movie and Harry isn't the hero he is supposed to be yet, but you get to see the glimpses. You really feel like he could be the greatest ever and you feel like this could be a great series, things that have yet to happen.
Movie Order After Watching: (from GOOD to BAD)
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Interesting Points about the Movie:
- I like how the woman who tried to seduce Tom Selleck in "3 Men and a Little Lady" is the evil step mom.
- I'm not quite sure why these people want to keep Harry. They clearly hate him.
- Hagrid is the coolest character in the movie (why isn't he anymore?).
- 30 minutes in there is a sense of wonder and amazement that doesn't really exist anymore in the movies.
- Harry Potter is rich.
- Same type of wand (phoenix feather wise) was Voldemort's.
- Dumbledore claps by slapping the back of his hand.
- They get a PG rating when a guy partially removes his own head.
- Harry Potter doesn't just follow the rules, in fact he breaks them all the time in the movie.
- Why does everybody freak out and try to leave the cafeteria where all the teachers are when they find out about the troll?
- Even the troll tries to the sneak into the girls bathroom.
- Quidditch seems to be the most nonsensical sport EVER.
- Ron's parents ditch him on christmas...lol.
- Why use the invsibility cloak if you are going to have the lamp outside of it? (nobody is going to care about a floating lamp?).
- Why didn't Dumbledore just destroy the stone to begin with?
- The house cup never seems to get mentioned again?
- Dumbledore gives Gryffindor the house cup.
- Why is there an "evil" house? (I'm half joking here)
